Arun Sankar | Afp | Getty ImagesFormer BP CEO Bob Dudley on Tuesday said that Bernard Looney's abrupt resignation last month came as a shock and denied any prior knowledge of the latter's past personal relationships with colleagues. Looney succeeded Dudley, who stood down as BP CEO in 2020. He informed the company that he was not "fully transparent in his previous disclosures" about relationships with colleagues before becoming CEO, BP said. "Things at BP are OK. We move forward as you would expect, despite the change that happens," interim BP CEO Murray Auchincloss said Monday during a CNBC-moderated ADIPEC panel session. Dudley — who now chairs the Oil and Gas Climate Initiative, an organization backed by BP, Saudi Aramco, Exxon Mobil and other Big Oil firms — echoed Auchincloss' view.

"It's certainly true that today, this relationship is experiencing new heights." The U.S. and India are closer now than ever before, but that relationship could be further strengthened. "Many of [these tariffs] have been pending for years and we've agreed to bury the hatchet on those," Tai said.

Australia wants trade ties with China to be normalized, but Beijing must first remove the remaining trade curbs, said Australia's assistant minister for trade told CNBC. Canberra is in dialogue with its largest trading partner to drop tariffs on Australian wine imports that were introduced in March 2021. At the peak of diplomatic tensions in 2020 and 2021, Beijing slapped import tariffs on several Australian exports, from wine and red meat to lobsters and timber. "That is a good outcome, but I want to see — and the Australian government wants to see — trade with China return to normal and to be stabilized across the board," Tim Ayres told CNBC's Martin Soong in an interview on the sidelines of the B20 summit in New Delhi over the weekend. "Until we remove all of those impediments, it's not possible to say that the trade is back to normal," Ayres added.

watch nowChina's dominance in rare earths makes U.S. supply chains vulnerable, U.S. Trade Representative Katherine Tai said in an exclusive interview Saturday with CNBC's Martin Soong. "And until we are able to access and create additional supply chains we remain entirely vulnerable to that leverage," the U.S. trade representative said. But lower labor costs overseas, as well as less pressure on environmental standards, helped send the rare earths industry out of the U.S. watch nowIn the case of rare earths, Tai pointed out that China has a monopoly in the global market. While lithium is a key component of electric car batteries, it isn't one of the 17 metals scientifically categorized as rare earths.

JAKARTA, Nov 16 (Reuters) - Coal miner PT Indika Energy (INDY.JK) and Taiwan-based Foxconn (2317.TW), which are partnering to make electric vehicles in Indonesia, are considering bringing in a Thai firm as a third partner, Indika's top executive told Reuters on Wednesday. Arsjad Rasjid, President Director of Indonesian miner Indika, declined to name the Thai company nor any target for the completion of the partnership due to ongoing negotiations, but said the three could invest in EV or EV battery production. In September, Indika and Foxconn launched a $2 billion joint venture to make EVs, batteries and energy storage in Indonesia. Foxconn, Apple's biggest iPhone maker, also has a $1 billion joint venture with Thai energy group PTT (PTT.BK) to produce battery EVs. Indika is one of the top coal miners in Indonesia, which is the world's biggest coal exporter.
The meeting takes place as both countries work to improve relations overshadowed by disputes over trade, Taiwan, human rights and the origins of the COVID-19 pandemic. China is Australia’s biggest trading partner, accounting for up to a third of its roughly A$475 billion ($303 billion) of annual exports. Australia's relations with China began to sour in 2017 when Australia introduced laws to deal with what it said was Chinese interference in Australian politics. Two Australian journalists, Cheng Lei and Yang Hengjun, are in jail in China awaiting sentences after closed-door national security trials. Albanese said China acknowledged that Australia had raised the issue of the imprisoned journalists but he gave no further details.
"Previously, the discussion was binary in which you had to choose between renewable energy or existing technology. A "realistic" mix of renewable energy and greener existing infrastructure is needed to help Asia's emerging economies meet a power consumption boom in coming years, Izumisawa said. "You have to think not just about renewable energy, but how to make better use of resources like coal and LNG," he said. Japan, the world's fifth-biggest CO2 emitter, has also called for more focus on promoting the transition of existing fuel plants to greener energy resources. Indonesia is the world's fourth-most populous country and eighth-biggest emitter of greenhouse gases, with coal making up about 65% of its total energy mix.
